John is directing and designing ROAD SHOW (Previously BOUNCE) for the Public Theater, New York in the autumn, and will be directing MADAME BUTTERFLY for the Nevill Holt Festival and Pimlico Opera Tour in 2010 and at Grange Park Opera in 2012.
His production of A CATERED AFFAIR has just finished playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway and won the Drama League Award for ‘Distinguished Production of a Musical’, and was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award for ‘Outstanding New Musical’ and the Dramadesk Award for ‘Outstanding Director’ and for ‘Outstanding Musical’. He also won the San Diego Critics Award for ‘Best Director of a Musical’ for its run at the Old Globe, San Diego.
His production of COMPANY played on Broadway in the 2007 season and won the Tony Award for ‘Best Revival of a Musical’, the Drama League Award for ‘Distinguished Revival of a Musical’ and the Outer Critics Circle and the Dramadesk Awards for ‘Outstanding Revival of a Musical’. John himself was nominated for the Tony Award for ‘Best Director of a Musical’ and the Dramadesk and the Outer Critics Circle Awards for 'Outstanding Director of a Musical'.
For SWEENEY TODD (which he also designed), which has recently completed a USA tour, he won the Tony Award for ‘Best Director of a Musical’. It also received the Outer Critics Circle ‘Outstanding Direction’ and ‘Outstanding Revival of a Musical’ awards, and was winner of 4 of its 9 nominations for the Drama Desk Awards including ‘Outstanding Director’ and ‘Outstanding Revival of a Musical’, for its Broadway run in 2006. Previously in the West End, on UK tour and at the Watermill Theatre, it was also nominated for the ‘Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical’ and for the ‘Evening Standard Best Musical Award’.
Other recent work includes Benjamin Britten’s PETER GRIMES for the Metropolitan Opera in New York; MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG at the Watermill Theatre in association with ATG and LUCIA di LAMMERMOOR (Scottish Opera); THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY (Los Angeles Opera); AMADEUS (as director/designer, Wilton’s Music Hall); MACK AND MABEL (starring David Soul and Janie Dee, West End/tour/Watermill); PETER PAN (own adaptation, Oxford Playhouse) and ELIXIR OF LOVE and THE TAILOR’S DAUGHTER (Welsh National Opera).
