On a MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - recently at Theatr Clwyd
“...From the moment a cascade of leaves carpets the stage and turns a plain set into a haunted forest, the magic begins and a tale of love denied and love confused unfolds with increasing complexity......Director Tim Baker and designer Mark Bailey have done an outstanding job and especially in the matter of the leaves that conceal characters where necessary and become useful props in sliding, scooping and throwing.....”
“....I’ve never seen so powerful or vivid a transformation from court to enchanted wood as this. The carpet of leaves then becomes bower, bed, hiding place and a cushion for some of the best theatrical comic falling you could wish to see. Tim Baker’s clearly spoken, beautiful looking main stage production gets Mold’s mini Shakespeare festival off to a great start. It holds the play’s three worlds in perfect balance....”
“....Tim Baker’s beautiful, magical and funny production is full of good performances and exceptional movement but it’s the leaves that will be remembered. At first a few, then more and finally a torrent, falling to transform Athens into a fairy wood.... This clearly spoken, lovely looking production balances all the play’s threads, giving them equal weight in a richly enjoyable piece of pure theatre...”
“....This production marks director Tim Baker’s first foray into Shakespeare in the ten years he has been at Clwyd Theatre Cymru and it is certainly to be hoped it won’t be his last. Designer Mark Bailey’s set is vast and clutter-free, the only visible structure being a simple, plain series of portals. The whole changes miraculously and in truly stunning fashion from an Athenian palace to an enchanted woodland – a feat achieved by the descent of thousands of ‘leaves’ which cover the stage.....”
